Late Goal from Gallagher Secures Win for Reserves

Peter Treanor and Thomas Gallagher hit 1-02 apiece as Glenavy withstood a strong second half rally from visitors, St. Paul’s to edge this Senior Reserve Shield encounter at Chapel Hill tonight.

The home side looked to be coasting to a comfortable win when they led the Shaw’s Road side by 1-8 to 0-5 at the interval but they were forced to defend in numbers to stave off a late rally from the hoops.

Sean O’Doherty was another in good scoring form for the home side with 0-03 while the hard working Ethan McGarry, Dominic Gallagher and Anthony Gallagher all weighed in with a point each.

It was St. Paul’s who dominated after the break coming from six points down and some great combination play from the O’Hanlon brothers, mid-fielder Alan Hyndman and the ever dangerous Ruairi Hamill saw them edge ahead going into the dying minutes but a late Glenavy goal spoiled the party.

Declan Doone, Ethan McGarry and Fra McMullan were the Chapel Hill side’s best performers on the night and they now join Tir na nOg on four points but face a difficult away fixture to neighbours Aldergrove in their final game and need at least a draw to be certain of a place in the play-offs.
